Noise

Melissa J.  |  07.21.2023

There’s a scene in the Dr. Suess’ The Grinch (you may remember) where the grinch talks about the Who’s down in Whoville making all the “noise, noise, Noise, NOISE!!!” And he says, “Oh, the one thing I hate, all the noise, noise, noise, noise!”

I feel that on a deep level, Mr. Grinch. Oh, I hate all the noise, noise, noise, noise. In fact, my brain is wired in such a way that noise brings me anxiety. You with me on this? When there is so much audible clutter, I literally don’t know which thing to address first, and I get overwhelmed and kind of panicky. I’ve felt that way a lot lately, and I realized why. Our world is full of it: noise.

I think we got caught up in it for a while, at Oh My Cupcakes! I mean, it’s becoming increasingly hard to get our messages across in this new digital landscape. I had a thought a few weeks ago: “How do we break through all the noise and reach our favorite customers and guests more effectively?” And then it dawned on me: we can’t. And I don’t think we really want to. By attempting to break through all the noise, we were just adding to the chaos and audible clutter. I don’t think breaking through the noise is the answer. I think the answer is instead, pulling back. Becoming softer. Speaking messages that are more meaningful and intentional for the guests that know and love us. I’m not going to try and break through all the noise anymore. Because in a world of noisy cacophony, I believe soft and quiet will stand on their own and speak their own type of gentle and peaceful message. Here’s to you, peace. Here’s to you, calm. And here’s to you, those of you who are seeking both.

With blessings and gratitude,
Melissa
