When a customer makes a purchase at Oh My Cupcakes with a credit card, the bakery’s iPads serve like the Martha Stewart version of a cash register.
The shop uses Square, a software application that tracks inventory, registers sales and processes payments.
“Lots of people make comments like, ‘Wow, technology!’ or ‘Is that your whole cash register?’” CEO and founder Melissa Johnson said. “People seem to really be receptive, they really seem to like it.”
Oh My Cupcakes switched from a traditional point-of-sale method to four iPads using Square.
“We had been looking into some different restaurant software programs, but, of course, they’re very costly, and we really liked the portability and affordability that Square would offer us,” Johnson said. “It makes it easier for small businesses to be able to accept credit card payments. That had sometimes been a hurdle or an obstacle for some before. It’s a lot easier now.”
